Water electrolyzers are electrochemical devices used to split water into its constituent elements, hydrogen and oxygen, by passage of an electrical current. There are four main types of electrolyzers: alkaline and proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzers are already mature, while anion exchange membrane (AEM) and solid oxide electrolyzers are still under development. These technologies differ in numerous ways, most notably in cell design and variations within components. SunHydrogen, the U.S.-based developer of a breakthrough technology to produce renewable hydrogen using sunlight and any source of water, has provided a first look at the prototype design for its forthcoming nanoparticle-based green hydrogen technology.
Topsoe has taken final investment decision (FID) to begin construction of the world’s largest SOEC electrolyzer manufacturing plant in Herning, Denmark. The plant will have a manufacturing capacity of 500 MW per year, with an option to expand to 5 GW. Construction is set to start in H2 2022.
Sibanye-Stillwater and Heraeus Precious Metals have agreed to jointly collaborate on research and development of novel electrocatalysts containing platinum group metals with high activity and stability for PEM electrolysers utilised in the production of green hydrogen.

Nel will build a new fully automated production line at Herøya in Norway, doubling its capacity for production of alkaline electrolyser stacks to ~1 GW. The new line is expected to be in operation from April 2024. Total capex commitment for equipment will be around EUR 35 million.

Australian hydrogen electrolyser developer Hysata has raised AU$42.5 million in its latest funding round, exceeding expectations. Funding from the Series A round will be used to grow the company’s team and develop a pilot manufacturing facility.
Brazilian chemical company Unigel is investing of USD 120 million in the development of the first industrial-scale green hydrogen plant in Brazil. Incorporating electrolyzer technology by thyssenkrupp nucera, the plant is expected to come online in late 2023.
Johnson Matthey (JM), a global sustainable technologies company, has announced that it is building an £80 million gigafactory at its existing site in Royston, UK, to scale up the manufacture of hydrogen fuel cell components. The site is expected to be in operation by H1 2024.
The German electrolyzer manufacturer is the first EU-based green hydrogen company to receive an investment from Amazon’s Climate Pledge Fund. With its dedicated investment program, Amazon supports visionary companies that will accelerate its path to net zero.
