Water electrolyzers are electrochemical devices used to split water into its constituent elements, hydrogen and oxygen, by passage of an electrical current. There are four main types of electrolyzers: alkaline and proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzers are already mature, while anion exchange membrane (AEM) and solid oxide electrolyzers are still under development. These technologies differ in numerous ways, most notably in cell design and variations within components. In a serendipitous scientific discovery, a team of researchers from the National University of Singapore have found that light can trigger a new mechanism in a catalytic material used extensively in water electrolysis. The result is a more energy-efficient – and potentially revolutionary – method of obtaining hydrogen.
In what is seen as a major breakthrough, researchers of the Dutch applied technology institute TNO have developed an advanced electrocatalyst that reduces the required amount of iridium by a factor of 200, while achieving an average of one third of the performance of current PEM electrolysers.

Green hydrogen producer Lhyfe is targeting to build a 200 MW hydrogen production plant in the Chemical Cluster Delfzijl, situated in the Dutch province of Groningen. Planned to be commissioned in 2026, the plant will have an annual production capacity of more than 20,000 tons of renewable hydrogen.
Chemours has announced a planned USD 200 million investment to increase capacity and advance technology for its Nafion™ ion exchange materials. The investment will support growing demand for green hydrogen production, energy storage, and hydrogen conversion to power fuel cells.
Nel Hydrogen US has been granted USD 5.6 million in funding from the U.S. Department of Defense for accelerating advanced PEM electrolyser stack development, to enable low-cost hydrogen storage and resiliency applications, in collaboration with the ERDC’s Construction Engineering Research Laboratory.
