Water electrolyzers are electrochemical devices used to split water into its constituent elements, hydrogen and oxygen, by passage of an electrical current. There are four main types of electrolyzers: alkaline and proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzers are already mature, while anion exchange membrane (AEM) and solid oxide electrolyzers are still under development. These technologies differ in numerous ways, most notably in cell design and variations within components. IMI Critical Engineering has expanded its technology portfolio by launching a proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyser. Launched to support the industrial adoption of hydrogen energy, the new IMI VIVO electrolyser comes in a modular, containerised design, which allows multi-MW plants.
On 22 September, French green hydrogen producer Lhyfe launched Sealhyfe, the world’s first offshore green hydrogen production facility. Located in the port of Saint-Nazaire, France, the Sealhyfe platform has the capacity to produce up to 400 kg of renewable green hydrogen a day, equivalent to 1 MW of power.

Italian compressor manufacturer SIAD Macchine Impianti has signed a framework agreement with Norwegian electrolyzer company Nel for the supply of hydrogen compressors. Australia’s first large-scale renewable hydrogen plant is due to be built in the Pilbara, after the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) conditionally approved $47.5 million towards ENGIE’s renewable hydrogen and ammonia project near Karratha in Western Australia, scheduled for completion in 2024.
Topsoe and green ammonia early mover First Ammonia have signed an agreement for the reservation of 5 GW of solid oxide electrolyzer cell (SOEC) units to produce green ammonia. To date, this is the largest such an agreement in the world, for any type of electrolyzer, and could help displace nearly 5 bcm of natural gas.
On 10 September, Norwegian HydrogenPro has received what is claimed to be the world’s largest electrolyser. Manufactured at the company’s factory in Tianjin, China, the electrolyser arrived at its Herøya test facility in Norway, where it will be assembled and installed in the coming weeks, with the validation process initiated when possible.

Cummins has announced that it will expand PEM electrolyzer manufacturing capacity at its Oevel, Belgium, factory to 1 GW, with the support from the Important Project of Common European Interest (IPCEI) Hy2Tech program recently approved by the European Commission.
